John lived his life to prepare the way for Jesus and we can learn from his testimony two steps to preparing the way for the Lord, #1 Be humble before him and #2 Tell others about him.
John was baptizing and had built this reputation as John the Baptist but in John 3 now Jesus was also baptizing nearby and “everyone” was going to him. Although baptizing was John’s purpose and calling he is happy that this is happening. John was preparing the way for Israel, the bride, to receive Jesus, the bridegroom, and now that bridegroom had come, he was happy to send all those who followed him to Jesus. His joy is complete now that he has heard the voice of Jesus coming to be with his bride. He says something that emphasizes how he modelled being humble before God, the first step of preparing the way for the Lord. John says John 3:30 “He must become greater; I must become less.”
Then John tells us in John 3:31-36 more about what he has heard and understood from what he had heard Jesus teaching. He tells his listeners about his encounters with Jesus, the second step of preparing the way for the Lord. He says
In much the same way that John prepared the way for Israel to receive Jesus, we can prepare the way for our friends, families, neighbors, and co-workers to receive Jesus as well. As you go about your day to day interactions with people, pray and share the good news in word and deed.
