John 1:35-51. James 4:8,
Becoming Disciples

John shows us by the examples of the first five disciples beginning to follow Jesus that there are four steps to becoming a disciple.

Step # 1: Leave whatever is discipling you

Step # 2: Make the decision to go meet Jesus

Step # 3: Meet with God and choose to follow Him

Step # 4: Be a disciple who makes more disciples of Jesus

We are all disciples of something whether we know it or not. There are forces at work to form us and mold us to look like them but often it’s not what we want to look like. It is important to leave whatever is discipling you unintentionally and make the decision to go look for Jesus, make the decision to go meet him!

Once we’ve done these two things you need to actually meet with God. God meets with us when we go to meet him and then we choose to follow him. When people intentionally go and look to meet with Jesus I believe that they will meet with him eventually. It may not happen the first time or every time but I know that if I'm looking to meet with him to draw near to God. It may take time but be patient as you look to meet with God and once you do, choose to follow Him. He’s extending the invitation to you, he wants you to be his disciple. He just needs you to choose to follow him. Choosing to follow Jesus is to do everything you can to be with him, become like him and do as he did. Choosing to follow Jesus means to follow his way of life.

The final step that John shows us of how to become a disciple is to be a disciple who makes more disciples of Jesus. Your life should look different than it did before you chose to follow him. Your life should be transformed by following his way and by the change in our life we should cause others to ask, why are you different? And we can respond, come and see Jesus and have them go through the process of becoming a disciple themselves. The goal is for the whole world to become disciples but so few are following the way. So the question for you today is this; will you choose to become a disciple. Will you leave what was discipling you behind, make a decision to meet with Jesus, accept his invitation to be his disciple, and be a disciple who makes more disciples of Jesus?
