John 13:31-14:7
Preparing the Way

Read John 13:31-14:7

Jesus tells his disciples that he's not going to be with them forever, that he's going to be with them for just a little while longer and then where he's going they cannot come. He tells them to love one another as he loved them so that others will know that he they are his disciples which is an incredibly powerful instruction that they fail to receive because they are stuck on the first part. Peter asked Lord where are you going and I think we can all agree that that seems confusing. They wanted to follow Jesus the Messiah the coming King and now he's saying that he won't be at a place where they can follow him.  Jesus replied to tell him that they cannot come now but later they will follow him.  Peter replies again I will follow you. I will lay down my life for you. Why can't I follow you now? I don't want to follow you later, I want to follow you now.

Again we see how Peter desires more and more intimacy with God but he doesn't understand, none of the disciples understand what Jesus is talking about when he's telling them that he won't be with them  for much longer. They don't understand that Jesus is going to be glorified by being lifted up on a cross and on that cross he will die and then he will go to be with the father. In those 3 days he will defeat the pit, Satan, death and the grave.  Jesus during this time is going to go to heaven to be with God and they cannot join him there yet.

The disciples have been following Jesus for years and now he's telling them that  they can't follow him and they just don't quite get it yet.

In John 14:1-7 Jesus tells them to believe in him and to believe that he will prepare a place for them in his Father's house for them to join him there. He will go prepare a place for them and then come back and take them there. He tells them that they already know the way to get there.

But Thomas asks the question I don't understand where are you going? If we don’t know where you are going how can we know the way there?

Jesus then tells them that he is the way, the truth, and the life that no one will come to the father and to the father's house except through him. He says if you know me if you know Jesus then you know my father as well and I've seen him through me.

Although the disciples still do not know where they are going they now know the way to get there is Jesus. Following Jesus believing in Jesus he will open the way to you and guide you to where you will be going.

If we believe in Jesus we get to go to heaven when our life here is done or Jesus comes again. We get to go to heaven and not to the place where God is not, the pit of weeping and gnashing of teeth. If we do not follow Jesus then we will not go to heaven. He is the only way he is the only way to go there. Will you put your faith in Jesus? Once you have done so will you then pray and share your faith so that those you love will put their faith in him as well?
