Read John 14:7-11: Jesus tells his disciples that they know his Father because they have seen him since the Father is in him and he is in the Father. The disciples they didn't realize until now that Jesus has been showing God the Father to them. What Jesus does in the Gospels, what Jesus says, and what he has shown his character to be is the same that God that Father would do, say, and show if they could see Him themselves.
Jesus was and is fully God and fully man and he showed the fullness of God to his disciples. If we look through the Gospel of John we can see Jesus's compassion, mercy and his desire to care for people and to build others up and to draw all people to God for his glory. Jesus showed his disciples God's power and might but also he showed them his tenderness and his desire to have a relationship with those who follow him.
Jesus shows us so much about who God is that we can miss when we read the Old Testament. Before Jesus the divine revelation of who God is was only found in the Old Testament.
Today when we read the Bible we can get glimpses of God in the Old Testament. We can see glimpses of his character like in Exodus 34:5-7 but passages like this in Exodus are few and far between. Reading the first 5 books of the Bible and in fact all of the Old Testament we can learn a good amount about God but it's hidden inside different stories and in the midst of the law and a census.
In the gospels we read of the story of Jesus, the descendant of God, Adam, Noah, Abraham, and David. Through the gospels that tell us about his story we can read about God by reading about Jesus' life. God the Son shows God the Father to us so we can learn about our God and be more able to believe in him. Since the beginning of the Church people have learned and heard about who God is by learning and hearing about Jesus. The gospels were written to preserve what the disciples had seen Jesus do and say.
By knowing who Jesus is, we can know God in a way that only a few in the Old Testament. I would encourage you to continue to learn more about God by reading and learning, and taking too hard everything that Jesus taught. Read the gospel and let them revealed to you more about God and surrender your life again to him.
